Where these numbers come from
The daily bands are drawn from tracked spending on real trips: Vietnam at 27 pounds a day, Georgia at 31, Poland at 44, Portugal at 61, Japan at 88. Each region has three bands for budget, middle and comfort travel, and the calculator splits the daily figure into beds, food, transport and activities in the proportions those trips actually followed.
Making the estimate cheaper
Three changes move the total more than anything else. Fly midweek instead of Friday or Sunday. Stay one district out from the centre and use the metro. Cook or buy market food for one meal a day. Together those cut a typical European week by around a fifth without changing what you see. +How accurate is a trip cost estimate?
Within about fifteen percent for shoulder season travel booked six to ten weeks ahead. Flights are the most volatile line. Check live prices before you commit and treat the estimate as a planning figure.
+What is the cheapest region for a two week trip?
Southeast Asia and South Asia are cheapest on the ground at 25 to 45 pounds a day, but flights from the UK cost 480 to 520. For a two week trip, Eastern Europe and the Balkans usually beat them on total cost because flights are under 100 pounds.
+Does travel style change the flight price?
Yes. Budget style assumes hand luggage on a low cost carrier and awkward hours. Comfort style assumes a full service carrier, a checked bag and sensible times, which is why it adds around forty percent.
+Should I book flights or accommodation first?
Flights. They move more, they sell out faster and they set the dates. Accommodation in most of the world can be booked a week out without a penalty, outside major festivals and peak August.
