Time zones are the quiet cause of missed plans

Most missed calls, blown check ins and confused pickup arrangements come from a mental arithmetic error of one hour, usually because one of the two places has already changed its clocks and the other has not. Europe, North America and Australia all change on different weekends, so there are stretches of the year where the usual gap is wrong.

Some zones are not whole hours either. India is five and a half hours ahead of Greenwich, Nepal is five and three quarters, and parts of Australia sit on half hour offsets. The converter uses the real rules rather than rounding.

Once you know the gap, plan the recovery with the jet lag calculator and check how long you will be in the air with the flight time calculator.

Questions people ask

+Does this handle daylight saving?

Yes. The conversion uses the real time zone rules for the date you pick, so a comparison in July and one in January give different gaps where clocks change.

+Why does the date change between the two cities?

Once the gap is large enough, the local clock in one place crosses midnight. Tokyo is eight or nine hours ahead of London, so a London evening is already the next morning in Japan.

+When should I call home from abroad?

Work backwards from their day rather than yours. Between eight in the morning and ten at night local to them is safe. The tool flags whether the moment you picked lands in that window.

+Which cities are included?

Around sixty five cities across every inhabited continent, covering the main travel hubs and the destinations written about on this site.
